Guitarist, improviser and composer, Joy Anandasivam has established a
reputation for himself as an exceptionally unique musician.
Born in a musical family from South India, he was exposed to Carnatic music
from childhood. He left his native land in the early 80's bearing only his
roots, culture and guitar to live in Montreal to explore western music,
particularly Jazz. Joy has a unique approach in adapting Carnatic music and
its stylized ornamentations on electric guitar. Over the past fifteen years,
Joy has performed across Canada and Europe. He has been featured on CBC's
Global Village and won MusicPlus' Guitar Wars contest.
He heads the Joy Anandasivam Quintet and the techno based Indian fusion band
Urban Native. As a sideman, his versatility has been remarked upon by many
celebrated jazz musicians and others of various styles as has the virtuosity
and ingenuity which consistently prevail throughout his performances.
He furthers his journey into uncharted territories, by continuing to explore
jazz and impressionists textures, and thorough his study of south Indian
classical music with Prasana Ramaswamy. |
